Cassel centenary film ‘ Hospital in the Mind’ released

The Cassel Hospital centenary film , “Hospital in the Mind,” was premiered during Mental Health Awareness Week 2024.

This fascinating documentary chronicles the hospital’s history but also addresses key themes, including discussions on recovery, hope, and renewal. It features four generations of voices from those who have lived and worked at the Cassel, painting a vivid picture of its evolution and impact.

Over 80 people attended the event, including 18 of the people interviewed in the film, the great- great grand daughter of the founder, Ernest Cassel, and the daughter of the first clinical director Tom Main.

The documentary offers a unique insight into one of the world’s first therapeutic communities. It highlights the Cassel’s pioneering approach, combining individual psychoanalysis with psychosocial practice. The Cassel Hospital is the only in-patient service of its kind in the UK, providing treatment for patients with complex emotional needs over nine months, followed by two years’ of outreach support.

Following this initial screening, plans are underway to organise more viewings and discussions to raise further awareness, improve understanding, and reduce the stigma associated with personality disorders and complex trauma.
