This film is based on a paper presented by former Cassel patients at the BIGSPD conference in June 2023, and subsequently published in the International Journal of Therapeutic Communities.

Using a diary format, it chronicles their experience during a typical week in the life of an Outreach patient at The Cassel, where a strong culture of peer support means that ‘the patients become the treatment’.

The film portrays how the therapeutic community model works and highlights the importance of relationships between the patients who relate to and impact one another.

But it also demonstrates hope, because the Cassel culture of peer support and the benefits delivered by the two-year outpatient social and occupational therapy programme can ease the transition from inpatient care back into a meaningful pattern of regular daily life.
