Treatment for personality disorders

Personality disorders may be mild, moderate or severe and people may have periods of ‘remission’ where they function well.

Some people have mild conditions so need support only at times of stress, such as bereavement. Other people with more severe problems may need specialist psychological or medical treatment for longer periods.

Many people with a personality disorder recover over time. There’s no single approach to treatment that suits everyone – treatment should be tailored to the individual.

Types of treatment

  • Talking therapies
  • Therapeutic communities
  • Medication

The Cassel hospital’s  treatment programmes help people reduce self-harm, suicidal and other self-destructive behaviours, so that they can build and foster healthy social and family relationships.

Among the treatment outcomes are helping patients to integrate back into the community, with a reduced reliance on local mental health services.
