HRH Princess Alexandra congratulates The Cassel on its centenary

As Patron of The Cassel Hospital Charitable Trust, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate The Cassel on the occasion of its centenary. Founded at the end of the First World War to treat patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, it is a great testament to the work of The Cassel and its staff that, over the years, the hospital has evolved into one of the foremost therapeutic communities treating personality disorder and complex trauma.

I am delighted to be Patron of a charity that is supporting The Cassel and its patients and staff, through the provision of education and training for its dedicated nurses, the provision of facilities for the patients;  and funding much-needed research into improving the care of patients.

I know that you have planned an exciting programme of commemorative events to mark this very special anniversary, including the Voices of The Cassel film, an academic conference, a commemorative quilt and a special edition of the International Journal of Therapeutic Communities.  The work to digitise the unique Cassel Archive will also provide an unparalleled glimpse into the development of practice throughout the Twentieth Century, and ensure that the inspirational heritage of The Cassel is accessible and lives on.

I send to you all my very best wishes for your commemorative activities and for the future.
